The Dirty Dozen Food List

Hello! Dr. Kelly here. The dirty dozen food list.
Have you ever heard of the dozen foods you should buy organic?

The dirty dozen is a list of foods that are highly contaminated with pesticides. When looking at your food budget, buying only food on the list organic helps stretch your dollar. I try to buy grass fed and organic food if possible. It is not always possible to get organic.

Here is the list of foods to buy organic to reduce the amount of pesticides you are exposed to.

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale, collard & mustard greens.
  4. Peaches
  5. Pears
  6. Nectarines
  1. Apples
  2. Grapes
  3. Bell & hot peppers
  4. Cheeries
  5. Blueberries
  6. Green beans

I also look for non-GMO foods. The Environmental Working Group is a great resource for reviewing pesticide contamination. I recommend clicking on their link and viewing the resources. Keep in mind that if you buy organic you also want to make sure that the food is good quality. The fresher the food the better.

veggie washI have been to the grocery store and the organic food is old and wilted. In those cases, I go with the better-looking food even if it is not organic. There are food sprays that help to remove pesticides.

I use Veggie Wash that I spray on my non-organic foods. Several companies use natural enzymes to help breakdown the pesticides. Keep a bottle at home for when you need it.

Buying local & knowing what the farmer is using on the foods is a wonderful choice. Farmers markets are a good to get food that has less chemicals on it but may not officially be labeled as organic. Stay tuned for the 15 Clean…..
